Antivirus Software Can Be Spreading Malware

Florian Bogner, a security consultant, found an issue within the antivirus software.  This is  called AVGater and it will take a piece of malware from the quarantined folder and place it on the victim’s computer, allowing the malware to attack.

Mr. Bogner notified the antivirus vendors that contained the defect.  Companies that released updates to fix the issue of AVGAter are Emisoft, Ikarus, Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, Trend Micro and ZoneAlarm.

AVGater requires attackers to have physical access to a machine.  This is an issue for shared computer environments.  The best way to prevent being affected by AVGater is to keep all antivirus software up to date and remove the ability to restore files from quarantine.
